  69.                           INSTALLING NU
  70.  
  71. If you are having trouble installing NU through the automatic
  72. INSTALL program, REM out all non-essential TSRs and device
  73. drivers from your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, restart your
  74. computer and attempt the installation again.  If you still have
  75. difficulty, use the following steps to install NU manually.
  76. Manual installation requires the use of PKUNZIP.EXE 1.10 or
  77. later, a shareware utility available on most bulletin board
  78. services.
  79.  
  80. 1.   Check your drive for errors.  Insert the EMERGENCY disk and
  81.      type:
  82.  
  83.           NDD C:/C <ENTER>
  84.  
  85. 2.   Create a subdirectory for the Norton Utilities.  For
  86.      example:
  87.  
  88.           MD C:\NU <ENTER>
  89.  
  90. 3.   Copy all the files from the three diskettes into the \NU
  91.      subdirectory.  For example:
  92.  
  93.           COPY A:*.* C:\NU <ENTER>
  94.  
  95. 4.   Use PKUNZIP.EXE to uncompress the seven zipped files.
  96.      Assuming C:\NU is your Utilities subdirectory, type:
  97.  
  98.           PKUNZIP C:\NU\*.ZIP C:\NU <ENTER>
  99.  
  100. 5.   Change to the \NU subdirectory run NUCONFIG with the
  101.      /$INSTALL switch to expand and rename some NU files.  Type:

  103.           NUCONFIG /$INSTALL <ENTER>

  105. 6.   Customize NU for your system by running NUCONFIG.  Type:
  106.  
  107.           NUCONFIG <ENTER>

  109. 7.   Find an expendable floppy that fits in drive A:.  Create a
  110.      rescue diskette by typing:

  114. 8.   Delete the *.ZIP and install files from the C:\NU directory:

  127.                    DIFFICULTY LAUNCHING NDIAGS
  128.  
  129. If your machine reboots while NDIAGS is "Determining System
  130. Contents", run NDIAGS with the following switch:
  131.  
  132.           NDIAGS /NOKBTYPE

  135.                LOCKUP LAUNCHING NDIAGS OR SYSINFO
  136.  
  137. If you lockup when launching NDIAGS or SYSINFO, check whether
  138. your modem's DCD is set high.  Some modems, such as the Gateway
  139. Telepath, use this default configuration.  You can reset the DCD
  140. to normal mode using your communications software.  Enter the
  141. following setup string:
  142.  
  143.           AT&C1&D2&W
  144.  
  145. Consult your modem's manual to find a jumper or dip switch that
  146. controls the DCD level.  If your modem has this capability, you
  147. can permanently set the DCD to normal mode by altering these
  148. settings.
  149.  
  150. If your modem's DCD is set to normal mode and NDIAGS still locks
  151. up during launch, you may have an IRQ conflict.  Run SYSINFO (if
  152. necessary, use the /PORT switch).  Under SYSINFO's SYSTEM menu
  153. are HARDWARE and SOFTWARE interrupts.  Check these lists to make
  154. sure that one or more of your devices shares an IRQ.

  157.       LOSING YOUR LOGITECH MOUSE RUNNING NDIAGS OR SYSINFO
  158.  
  159. Logitech mouse users who lose their mouse pointer while running
  160. NDIAGS and/or SYSINFO should consult Logitech.  Logitech may have
  161. information about drivers that correct this problem.  A temporary
  162. work around is to unplug the mouse for two seconds and then plug
  163. it back into its port.
  164.  
  165.  
  166.                   DIFFICULTY LAUNCHING SYSINFO
  167.  
  168. If your machine reboots or freezes while SYSINFO is "Determining
  169. System Contents", launch SYSINFO as follows:
  170.  
  171.           SYSINFO /PORT <ENTER>
  172.  
  173.  
  174.                            DISK LABELS
  175.  
  176. The documentation and the on-line programs refer to the Norton
  177. Utilities disk as "Disk 1", "Disk 2", and "Disk 3".
  178.  
  179.           The INSTALLATION disk is Disk 1.
  180.           The EMERGENCY disk is Disk 2.
  181.           The UTILITIES disk is Disk 3.
  182.  
  183.  
  184.           "OUT OF MEMORY" MESSAGE FROM SPEEDISK OR NDD
  185.  
  186. If you receive an "Out of Memory" message from either SPEEDISK or
  187. NDD and you use a memory manager, run its optimization program.
  188. Doing so configures your computer's memory efficiently.
  189.  
  190.           DOS 6 users should run MEMAKER
  191.           QEMM users should run OPTIMIZE
  192.           386MAX users should run MAXIMIZE.
  193.  
  194. If you don't have a memory manager or if running your
  195. optimization program does not free enough memory, restart your
  196. computer loading only your memory manager and essential TSRs and
  197. device drivers in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.  Create a bootable
  198. diskette using:
  199.  
  200.           SFORMAT A: /S
  201.  
  202. Place minimum configuration files on that diskette.  For example:
  203.  
  204.           SAMPLE CONFIG.SYS:
  205.  
  206.           DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  207.           DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
  208.           DOS=HIGH,UMB

  216. Booting with the above (or similar) configuration is not only the
  217. safest way to run SPEEDISK, but it allocates maximum
  218. conventional, UMB, and XMS memory.  SPEEDISK and NDD require
  219. abundant free memory because these programs now support
  220. compressed volumes and very large hard drives.
  221.  
  222. Beware of invalid options and switches in your memory manager's
  223. configuration.   Make sure you understand the purpose of each
  224. parameter.  If you include invalid regions and/or choose improper
  225. settings, you may experience a UMB conflict.  These conflicts may
  226. first reveal themselves while running Norton Utilities version
  227. 7.0.  NU 7.0 exposes UMB conflicts because we now use UMBs for
  228. program and data storage.

  231.           VIEWING THE READ.ME FILES BEFORE INSTALLATION
  232.  
  233. The README.1ST file is uncompressed.  You can read it using any
  234. DOS text editor.  Place the INSTALLATION disk in the floppy
  235. drive, change to the floppy drive, and use your text editor to
  236. view it.  Print it by typing:
  237.  
  238.           COPY README.1ST PRN <ENTER>
  239.  
  240. The READ.ME file is compressed.  To view it or print it prior to
  241. installation requires the use of PKUNZIP.EXE 1.10 or later, a
  242. shareware utility available on most bulletin board services.
  243.  
  244. To uncompress the READ.ME file, place the INSTALLATION disk in
  245. the floppy drive and copy README.ZIP to a subdirectory your hard
  246. disk.  From that subdirectory, type:
  247.  
  248.           PKUNZIP README.ZIP READ.ME <ENTER>
  249.  
  250. Once extracted, you can print the READ.ME file using the DOS COPY
  251. command as follows:
  252.  
  253.           COPY READ.ME PRN <ENTER>
  254.

  256.          THE SYMANTEC DIRECTORY AND ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
  257.                                 
  258. When you automatically install Norton Utilities version 7.0, it
  259. creates a directory called \SYMANTEC.  Both the Norton Utilities
  260. configuration file, SYMCFG.BIN, and the SMARTCAN.INI files reside
  261. in this subdirectory.  This subdirectory gives other Symantec
  262. products, such as Norton Desktop for Windows, access to common
  263. programs and configuration files.  The \SYMANTEC directory saves
  264. valuable disk space by allowing Symantec programs to share common
  265. resources.

  268.              DOS 6 AND NORTON UTILITIES VERSION 6.X
  269.  
  270. Norton Utilities version 7.0 is completely compatible with MS-DOS
  271. 6.0.  Norton Utilities version 6.0 was written before DOS 6,
  272. therefore certain NU 6 programs do not work correctly under
  273. MS-DOS 6.0.
  274.  
  275. 1.   NCACHE version 6 is not compatible with MS-DOS 6.0 DBLSPACE
  276.      drives.  Caching DBLSPACE host drives may cause system
  277.      lockups.  Use NCACHE2 from Norton Utilities version 7.0.
  278.  
  279. 2.   NU 6.x SPEEDISK's "Clear Unused Space" option should not be
  280.      used on MS-DOS 6.0 DBLSPACE volumes.  Doing so creates
  281.      allocation errors on some unused clusters.  Run SPEEDISK
  282.      from Norton Utilities version 7.0.
  283.  
  284. 3.   Do not perform a surface test on a DBLSPACE volume using NDD
  285.      from NU 6.  NDD 6.x might find a compression error and mark
  286.      the cluster bad.  NDD version 7.0 performs a decompression
  287.      scan on these volumes.  Use NDD version 7.0 on compressed
  288.      drives.
